Overview

I undertook a project with a profound mission - to reshape our color palette and meet ADA Compliance Guidelines while preserving our brand's essence of being 'bright, helpful & fun.' This project gained urgency due to a prior legal issue. Customer complaints regarding button visibility and ADA non-compliance of our colors necessitated immediate action to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Problem

Fivestars' brand color was purple, yet we consistently used a bright green for all our UI elements. This inconsistency, combined with non-ADA compliant colors, had led to significant legal troubles. It was a wake-up call, prompting us to take action. Additionally, we had a significant gap - no color palette for our illustrations.

Research

To initiate the project, I conducted comprehensive research to navigate the complex landscape of color choices and ADA compliance. One noteworthy aspect of this research involved studying the strategies of companies such as Robinhood and Credit Karma, both of which underwent a shift in their brand colors to meet ADA standards. This move piqued my interest, as these companies shared a similar reliance on a bright green color for their CTAs and other products, similar to Fivestars.

Delving deeper into their decisions allowed me to gain valuable insights into their color transformations. I sought to understand precisely how many shades darker I needed to go with our green to achieve ADA compliance while maintaining the essence of "bright, helpful & fun" that defines Fivestars. This meticulous exploration paved the way for the subsequent design phase, where I would put these insights into action and craft a color palette that struck the perfect balance between accessibility and brand identity.

Design

Building on the foundation laid during research, I ventured into the realm of design exploration. This presented an opportunity to thoughtfully build our brand guidelines, especially as we were entering the payment space. The exploration involved playing with a variety of colors to achieve ADA compliance and enhance our brand's visual appeal.

During this phase, I not only considered individual color choices but also their harmonious relationships within our design. This process involved experimenting with different color schemes, including complementary, monochromatic, analogous, and more. It was essential to ensure that our color choices not only met ADA guidelines but also resonated with our brand's essence of being 'bright, helpful & fun.'

This revised structure combines color evaluation and color theory with research while maintaining a separate section for design exploration, providing a comprehensive overview of your approach to the project.

Final Color System

Through rigorous iterations, I successfully crafted a comprehensive color palette that met ADA compliance guidelines for our UI elements. This palette addressed our previous non-compliance issues while preserving the core attributes of the Fivestars brand.

In addition, I introduced a dedicated illustration color palette, a significant departure from my previous reliance solely on our signature purple. This strategic decision enhanced visual consistency and flexibility in my design approach, allowing for a seamless integration of vibrant illustrations alongside my ADA-compliant UI colors. It also streamlined my design process and reinforced our brand identity, striking a balance between innovation and accessibility.

Color Palette Showcase

In the attached screen designs, you can witness the seamless integration of our ADA-compliant color palette into our products. Notably, while we introduced a darker green shade to meet ADA compliance, we retained our signature purple as the primary CTA color. This strategic choice enhances our brand's identity and ensures an overall branded look, staying true to our essence of being "bright, helpful & fun."
